Gargalianoi along with Kyparissia and Filiatra, are the three most important cities of today’s Municipality of Trifylia. They were the seat of the Municipality until 2010, when they all joined Kallikratis in the new expanded municipality of Trifylia. Gargalianoi is today widely known economic center of western Messinia.
Gargalianoi is built at the foot of Mountain Egaleo, on a green hill with amazing view of the olive groves and vineyards that flow into the sea level. They offer a healthy climate and a view of the Ionian Sea, which is only 7 km away from the town. Also nearby you can find the isle of Proti which is a magnificent place of beauty!
The town consists of 7,500 residents and is the commercial center of the region. In Gargalianoi you can find sports center, rural clinic and schools of all levels. In the area they have been found traces of habitation from the Early Helladic period (3000-2000 BC) and in antiquity it was under the rule of Pylos ruled equally by Nestoras. In the Venetian period it was referred to as “Gargaliano”, possibly from the name of a known Venetian who lived in the area. The village participated in the Greek Revolution of 1821, during which it was almost completely ruined, with more than a thousand volunteers recruited by Makrygiannis. After liberation, it was a mayor center of raisin production until the beginning of the twentieth century.
From Gargalianoi came the well known Macedonian Telos Agras, whose honor is held every year by locals in Agapineia event. Also from there came the 39th Vice-President Spyros Agniou and current Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus, pretty important personalities of our century. Finally, there was teaching in a school opened in 1812, the scholar Kallinikos Kastorhis.
In Gargalianoi, similarly as throughout the prefecture of Messinia, you’ll find a rich traditional cuisine and plenty of pure and healthy native products. The main agricultural foods produced in Messinia are olives, grapes, raisins, figs, citrus and fruit and vegetables.
Some of the specialties of the local cuisine are salads, boiled goat, scrambled cod with garlic, roast pork, and sage-smoked sausages unique to their taste and quality.
Try even marvelous “diples”, “lalagia” and oil bagels. Don’t forget to shop the far-famed Kalamata olives, honey, that are of excellent quality, “pasteli”, “ouzo”, balsamic vinegar, “trachana”, noodles, herbs and organic products.

The hill on the northern side of Gargalianoi with a magnificent view of the plain and the isle of Proti, where you can see with a radius from Pylos to Filiatra. In clear weather, the islands of Strofadia and Zakynthos are distinguished also.
In the central square of Gargalianoi city dominates the church of the 18th century. Inside the Sanctuary of the Church, is saved the miraculous icon. In the city are still the spiritual center and the library that hosts various cultural events with the most important one being “Agapineia”, on the first half of July, in honor of the Macedonian Tellos Agras.

Visitors who head to Gargalianoi between late March and May should expect to find clear skies and temperatures that hover between fifteen and twenty five degrees, making sightseeing pleasant and creating perfect walking conditions. It’s not uncommon for water temperatures to be warm enough for swimming throughout the early Spring also. The important Easter preparations that take place this time of year, where you see locals flooding the streets for the biggest celebration of Christianity. The nearest well known beaches for swimming are Mati , Lagkouvardos and Vromoneri. Not far from Gargalianoi you can visit other important tourist locations like Kyparrisia, Filiatra, Marathopolis, Kalo Nero and plan your vacations as you wish!
Driving: You’ll be able to drive from Athens to Gargalianoi in about three hours ten minutes on the National Road. Its not a bad drive and you will pass some attention-grabbing countryside.
