The founding of Marathos in the homonymous site until the year 1859, according to King Othonas, was upon the recommendation of the responsible Minister. Marathopolis was annexed to the old Municipality of Platamodous before 1889, while in 1899 it was transfered from the prefecture of Messinia to the prefecture of Trifylia for about a decade, until 1909, when it returned to the prefecture of Messinia, as a settlement of the Trifylia District. In 1912 the village was detached from the Municipality of Platamodous and was designated the seat of Marathopolis. Marathopolis remained the seat of the homonymous community from 1912 to 1997, when, in the changes made to the local government, through the Kapodistrias project, it was annexed to the abolished Municipality of Gargalianoi, and from 2011 onwards with the new changes to the “Kallikratis” project now belongs to the new Municipality of Trifylia. This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merging of the pre-existing municipalities of Aetos, Avlonos, Gargalianoi, Kyparissia, Filiatra and the Tripyla community.
